Jack Daniel’s

, , ,

What makes Jack Daniel’s extremely popular? First, it isn’t made the same as bourbon, because it is not bourbon. Second, Jack Daniel’s mellows thier whiskey through “ten feet of sugar maple charcoal”. It comes in thier famous bottle and holds its own section in many liquor stores. As being as popular as it is, I had the opportunity to ask other people randomly why they liked it. Mostly I heard, “It is good for taking shots because it burns”, or something of that effect. Though it does have other notes, I can’t disagree; it’s not incredibly smooth. Unfortunately for me, it just didn’t satisfy my whiskey needs.

Straight

The smell is very strong with alcohol, and burried somewhere in there is a bit of sweetness that I attribute to being added by the sugar maple charcoal. The burn at first is stout, and lasts for a few seconds, then I tasted some familiar whiskey flavors like the wood from the barrel and characters from the grain. Then, instead of a flavorful finish, it went back to just being a burn. With some ice cubes the burn was made more mild.

Mixed

I tried the ever famous Jack and Coke, and that wasn't for me. The Coke just added to the burn, and made the whole experience too sweet. So, I went with the competition, Dr. Pepper, and that almost completely eliminated the burn and made it half way enjoyable. As hard as it was to find a way to enjoy it, I won't be spending any more of my money on Jack Daniel's.

I consider the opinions above to be in the eye of the beholder. I like Jack Daniels for its bite.. but when I swallow it, i find a smoothness that just is not in most bourbons. The taste to me is more sweet with a nice sharpness at the end. Jack and Coke is just sweet enough to me with just enough of a bite to prove that you are drinking a mixed drink of good Tennessee Whiskey with a semi-sweet soda.. Not a mixed sweet drink that many today expect in alcohol drinks today.

  2. Our opinions are certainly just that, opinions. We like what we like and can only comment on that, which is why we greatly appreciate comments that differ from our opinion. Jack Daniel’s would not have become some popular without a large group of people that do enjoy it, this reviewer just isn’t one of them. As we grow, we might even revisit whiskies with a different reviewer and see how the opinions change.

Thank you though for writing your opinion and giving a differing view. We hope to see more personal reviews from our readers in our comments section.

I mainly drink Jack Daniels Single barrel and much prefer the slighty stronger, aromatic flavours it contains. I also find when mixing jack Daniels Black label with a coke mix it takes away the flavour and does become too “sweet” tasting however each to their own. http://www.jackdanielsno1whiskey.blogspot.com

  4. Jason, I’ve only had the Single Barrel once, and it’s been a while, but I will certainly agree that it’s a better product. There is just something about all Jack products that doesn’t sit right with me. We very much appreciate differing view points though, and welcome other opinions. So, for that, we thank you.

Next time, go with the Gentleman Jack. Much smoother, less bite. Single Barrel is indeed good, but a bit too pricey for what you get, IMO.

Jack Daniel’s IS all hype. Way to nail this review guys.

  7. We will surely get other Daniel’s products a shot, and a review. I know very well that you cannot rate an entire company based on one product.
